Case Study

ESOL Literacy Implementation & District Sustainability (4-year Engagement)

Brandywine School District | Wilmington, DE

OUTCOME
Brandywine School District strengthened literacy outcomes for secondary multilingual learners by building a coherent, data-driven ESOL system that improved instructional consistency, accelerated student progress, and sustained practices beyond the consulting engagement.

DISTRICT SITUATION
When I arrived, multilingual learners were remaining in ESOL programs longer than expected, and teachers lacked clear, shared systems for using curriculum and assessment data to guide instruction across middle and high schools.

APPROACH
I partnered with district leadership to design and implement a WIDA-aligned ESOL literacy system focused on clear growth targets, strategic implementation, and capacity-building for teachers and leaders. Through professional learning, coaching, PLC facilitation, and modeling, I guided educators in using data to adjust instruction, differentiate support, and build collective ownership.

WHAT CHANGED
Instructional use of data improved across schools, teacher confidence and collaboration increased, and students showed greater engagement and application of literacy strategies beyond the ESOL classroom. By the final year, leadership and instructional systems were successfully transitioned to district staff, ensuring long-term sustainability.
